About the Movie

‘The Craft: Legacy’ is a soft reboot and direct sequel to 1996’s ‘The Craft’. The sequel was nominated for the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Film (Wide Release), starring Cailee Spaeny, Gideon Adlon, Lovie Simone, Zoey Luna, Nicholas Galitzine, Michelle Monaghan, David Duchovny, and Fairuza Balk.

The movie received mixed reviews. Although it was nominated for the outstanding award, on watching the movie I had a completely opposite perspective and was disappointed.

Personal Verdict

The movie feels very rushed in many instances as though the director/writer wanted to keep it short and sweet at the cost of fewer quality scenes, bad script, etc. The casting, acting, special effects, storylines were definitely commendable but unrealistic magical scenes without any base gave too much of “Disney” feels.

For a person who is done with Disney or specifically magical movies for kids, this one was definitely sparkless. Certain plots did not make any sense and if this script or idea would have been transformed into a series it would have lasted for a longer period in the hearts or minds of its viewers.

“Fairly predictable but uninteresting.”

The script is very easy and simple to follow and this is the most probable reason why the movie does not live up to its genre. It will not excite you or make you imagine what may happen next.

Scenes involving the development of the relationship between Lily and Timmy seemed like an awkward adjustment, though made to highlight certain developmental and social changes teenagers experience in their life.

The movie tried really hard to convince me by focusing on the theme of difficulties faced by teenagers in society but as a matter of fact, in the light of trying to portray that theme, it abolished various other aspects trying to be less ambitious.

A slightly commendable aspect of the movie is also its message that women are powerful and stronger, social commentary, a different version of witchcraft, and touching upon sensitive issues like gender, identity, sexuality, toxic masculinity - It earned its keep.

The Bottom Line

“An overall poor work of production.”

Personally speaking, no doubt there are better witchcraft movies and series. Hence, I do not recommend it for a watch. But, if you are running out of ideas and just want to indulge in mind wandering then you can surely go for this one because it does not have much to serve you as entertainment on your plate.

My ratings for the movie - 1 on 5
