Atal Bihari Vajpayee was the first Prime Minister who did not belong to the Congress political party to complete his term as Prime Minister of India. Atal ji was born in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh on 25 December 1924.
He remained a bachelor till his death but his love for children made him to adopt and raise Namita Bhattacharya as his own child. She is the daughter of his beloved friend, Rajkumari Kaul and her husband B.N Kaul. His adopted family also lived with him.
His achievements are renowned worldwide. The Indian politician has served as a three time Prime
Minister of India with a first term only lasted for 13 days in 1996.
His second term lasted for a 13 month period between 1998 to 1999 and from 1999 to 2004 he completed his full tenure as a Prime Minister of India.
He was the founding member of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and also the member of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, a Nationalist rganization representing the Hindu religion. He served as the President of Bharatiya Jana Sangh from 1968 to 1972.
Atal ji was not just a politician, but also a writer. His creative side was showcased on the paper. He was a well known poet and Writer.
For five decades he was a Member of Parliament and was chosen ten times by the people in the Lok Sabha (Lower House) and elected twice to the Rajya Sabha (Upper house).
He was elected as the member of Parliament from Lucknow but unfortunately, in 2009 he retired from politics due to bad health. He is also amongst the founding members of the BJS (Bharatiya Jana Sangh).
The BJS party who won the 1977 general election were merged with other parties to form Janta party, which was later called Bharatiya Janata Party.
Atal ji was responsible to the external affairs ministry in the Morarji Desai government but Morarji Desai resigned as the Prime Minister of India in 1979 and the Janta alliance collapsed soon after.
This was when some of the former members of BJS (Bharatiya Jana Sangh) formed the BJP in 1980 with Atal Bihari Vajpayee as their first President.
In his tenure as the Prime Minister of India, he conducted the 2 nuclear tests at Pokhran in 1998. He was also very keen to keep good relations with Pakistan for which he travelled to Pakistan by bus to meet the Pakistan Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif.
After the 1999 Kargil War with Pakistan, he knew that he had to restore the relation of India and Pakistan. This was possible only because of Atal Bihari Vajpayee's engagement with the Pakistani Dictator Parvej Musharraf by inviting him to India for Agra summit.
This portrays him as a brilliant politician who was well aware about his agenda and wanted to maintain cordial relations with those who can cause trouble.
The Narendra Modi administration in 2014-15 marked the birth
date of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, 25 December as the Good Governance Day.
India's highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna was given to Atal Bihari Vajpayee in 2015 by the then President of India. He was also honoured with the Bharat Ratna Pranab Mukherjee. He died on 16 August, 2018 due to age related problems.
