Top 10 Scariest Movies to Watch to Get Goosebumps

When you are having a cousin's night-over and you feel like doing something crazy, the immediate resort is to watch a horror movie. Yes, I've been there, plenty of times.

I do love to treat myself with goosebumps by watching terrifying and gruesome horror films.

The jump-scares are what I live for. Despite the fact that I am watching them from between my fingers with my palm covering my face, I am watching them.

Over the years, I've seen hundreds of horror films and compiled a list of the top ten.

So prepare to be spooked.

The Ring

A videotape that whoever watches gets haunted by a little girl in white. An exceptional storyline with a great performance by Naomi Watts. The Ring marked as an introduction to the Eastern Horror Cinemas across the globe.

I liked all of the movie's classic scenes, which you can't get out of your head once you've seen them: a ladder, a horse being churned up by a propeller, the tv in the tub, suicide, hair-brushing, mirrors, and chairs. It's really good stuff.

The Conjuring

A huge farm and the houses in it, haunted by Bathsheba, a witch who sacrificed her newborn to express her love for Satan.

The story revolves around how two demonologists, Ed and Lorraine Warren, played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga respectively, help a family get rid of the ghost that has latched itself onto them.

With great shots and remarkable acting, this movie is one of the best of the Conjuring universe.

Beware: After watching this movie, 3:07 will never be the same for you.

The Witch

A movie set in the 17th century English period, shows an intense journey of a family thrown out of the village over a suspected practice of witchcraft. The movie deals with faith, nature and supernatural.

This is less of a horror film and more about the excellent cinematography.

The authenticity of this movie is much appreciated. What kept the viewers excited was the lack of showing any presence of witches.

Although there are no scary jump-scares, the movie surely has a set of disturbing scenes that may haunt you for days or even weeks.

If you are new into this genre, All the best to you...

The Babadook

This is one of the best and scariest psychological horror movies I've ever watched.

It's a difficult watch as I found myself wanting to turn it off multiple times

Both of the stars (Essie Davis and Noah Wiseman) gave outstanding performances, with some of the most realistic and wonderful performances I've ever seen in a horror film.

Overall the Babadook was an excellently made and deeply scary film that I will certainly not forget for a very long time.

The Exorcist

My whole list would be considered irrelevant if I miss to include this one.
This is by far the scariest movies I have ever watched.

Had to sleep with my lights on for a lot of nights after watching it. If you want to give yourself the same horror experience, this will be the best pick.

The Shining

A psychological horror film in the history of horror films made on the bestselling novel from the master himself, Stephen King.

The Shining took a simple concept of a haunted hotel and built it up into an unforgettable, psychological horror that will withstand the test of time despite being slated by it's the original creator.

The Shining took a simple notion of a haunted hotel and turned it into an unforgettable psychological horror film that, despite being panned by its creator, has stood the test of time.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre

Bloody, revolting, dark, scary, and astonishingly up to date for its low budget, novice filmmaker, and being released in 1974.

Based on the horrible true events of August 1973, this film will send you on a roller coaster of gruesome awesomeness and just-right brutality.

I strongly advise anyone tough enough to endure the insanity that these teenagers experienced to see this film.

Halloween

At the opening credits of this film, my heart was already racing. I was concerned after reading the critiques, but after watching it for myself, I can say that this film is all I've hoped for in a real sequel to the 1978 classic.

The cinematography is stunning and never loses its enchantment throughout the film. For the first time, Michael Myers appears.

His presence is eerie, especially when contrasted with the compassionate and humane Strodes. Jamie Lee Curtis gives a very enthralling performance, the kind that makes you understand and root for her right from the start.

Overall, this picture is a distinct take on John Carpenter's vision, honouring it enough to re-examine every element for a new generation while also introducing some surprising twists and turns. This year's Halloween is a solid 9/10.

Sinister

This film, in my opinion, is the epitome of the perfect nightmare. The characters are well-developed, the mythology is morbidly fascinating, and the scare sequences are creepy and thrilling. The film's jump-scares are all brilliantly timed and deliriously horrific.

However, the film does not rely solely on jump scares to terrorize its audience. It's very unpleasant and unnerving throughout, with plenty of scary, nauseating imagery that will stay with you for days after you've seen it.

The ending, in particular, is both heartbreaking and terrifying, and it remains one of the most horrifying horror film endings I've ever seen. Furthermore, the actors shown ( Ethan Hawke and Juliet Rylance) with their exceptional acting performance gave us this amazing bone-chilling horror.

This heightens the horror of the film's devastation by giving the impression that you're watching an actual family go through the ordeal.

Finally, all of the above aspects come together to create a genuinely terrifying and striking image that will chill your blood and make you fear every dark corner of your own home. I wouldn't suggest it to anyone but the most die-hard horror enthusiasts. This is without a doubt one of the scariest horror films I've ever seen.

Insidious

This is a fast-paced and exciting watch. In many respects, this is the quintessential jump scare horror film. Insidious, unlike most other films in this genre, does not rely solely on jump scares to be frightening.

It expertly employs the aforementioned haunted home tropes (such as spooky footsteps, noises from the attic, and disembodied voices) to build nerve-wracking tension that runs throughout the film and aids in the setup of the jump scares.

Psychological horror is exploited to terrifying effect throughout the film, making the audience's skin crawl on several occasions. The ending is one of the most spine-chilling horror movie endings I've ever seen.

Furthermore, the film's score is excruciatingly unsettling and creepy, and I have no reservations in declaring it the scariest score of any horror film released in the twenty-first century.

Roughly 5 minutes in and the perfectly angled shots and the timed jump-scares got me on my toes already.

I really advise everyone to watch it!
