When sex is a taboo in households and anything close to its discussion is a disaster. There is this badass sex therapist whose mommy throws a masturbation bomb at her son. Compelling the said son to dig a grave and dive right in.
Introduction
In 2019 when covid was nowhere near, and the audiences were going crazy about this sex-comedy teen series- Sex Education, I could only ponder over. It took me almost six months to finally give it a shot. And when I did, I only wished it’d never end.
So to start with, this show comes with a tagline of ‘Don’t judge a book by it’s cover.’ Because with the trailer all you can infer about is it is sex-crazed hormonal teenagers and some stupid raunchy plot. However, it turned out to be a total binge-worthy all-nighter.

Cast and characters
Otis Milburn/ Asa Butterfield - This guy is super adorable and extremely sexy with his perfect accent and twisted personality. He is exemplary of the fact that gone are the days, when heroes were tall, a dark and handsome. Girls today need a compassionate, caring and friendly guy like him. He is there for everyone, regardless of being their friend or not.
Maeve Wiley - She is another thing. In the very first scene she comes across as bold, sassy, feisty and a little arrogant. Yet she only unfolds to be kind and helpful just as Otis. She is a good friend, caring daughter, loving sister and a kind person. Her personality seems to be faulty, with nose rings and skanky clothes.
Eric Effiong/Ncuti Gatwa - Well if after Otis anyone grabs your attention and even more so, is this black guy, with his wise humour and defective lifestyle. He is jovial even in his worst times. Despite being disregarded by the society he isn’t afraid to own up. This guy has done some immaculate job.
Adam Groff/ Connor Swindlles - Uh! If it isn’t the broody Adam. He is a nutcase, from the very first scene his life seems like a concentration camp. Where you are supposed to do what others say and be a certain way. No matter what you want. Despite his bullying nature and dark side, you eventually feel for him.
Dr. Jean Milburn- You would hope to have a mother like her, giving you not only sex advice but ideas for sex.
Sex-Education
Education is so essential, in every aspect of life. And we all spend years getting educated, however no matter how open-minded we say we all are. But we all keep to ourselves when it comes to one of the most important aspects of life. Sex. Besides the hesitation and discomfort, sex education is anything but taboo.
So, when this show came out of the shadows giving us some seemingly abnormal sex stories of some normal teenagers it only made us realise that it is all normal.
This high school student Otis with the hottest British accent walks in with his eerie life problems, one you can only imagine. He has issues having sex; with himself. Well obviously right! When you are surrounded by sex toys instead of antique showpieces and furniture.
His mother Jean is the coolest yet the most embarrassing mom I have ever come across. Being a sex therapist runs in the family for this lovely mother son duo.
Moordale secondary school where every student is a special case.Just like our dear Otis his friend Eric(gay best friend) whose being bullied by Adam(son of the headmaster) has different life issues. Being black isnt already easy and to top it all he is gay, finding love is a long time come. Each kid has a story or rather a sexual story.
Whilst all the sex conundrum, there is our feisty and sassy Maeve, the solution to all Otis’s problems. As much as Otis hates his mom’s profession, unbeknownst to him he ends up doing exactly the same. In a major turn of events, he becomes the secret sex therapist of the school.

They say that the universe conspires to help you achieve what you really want. But it also conspires to get you what you never want. Such is the situation of Otis. He hates his mom being a sex therapist, surrounded by everything sex.
And suddenly, nobody becomes somebody. He remains anonymous, but discovers something about himself. During this period you realise that each and every person is struggling with so much. There are so many new things we get to know about sex. That physical intimacy and having sex is just the beginning of what is sex.

Well, what can I say about these two? I mean can we imagine amidst the sex-crazed hormones and so-called love, these two remain to be absolutely classic. Like Darcy and Elizabeth, or Daisy and Gatsby.
Yes! Because even though Otis falls for Maeve she isn’t available. In fact, he gives her to another guy. And when she falls for him, Otis isn’t available, for Maeve paved the way for him.
This goes around in circles for three seasons, without these two even kissing even once, only yearning for each other’s company, because they are just fireworks together.
My ratings of the series: 3 on 5
