India And The Academy Awards: A Cinematic Journey

Academy Awards (Oscar Awards) are considered the biggest and most famous awards since 1927. Those Who are involved in the making of the movie take the Oscar award as the most incredible honor. Several Indian films are nominated for an Oscar but they have not received the award.

Although an Indian movie has not won an Oscar, getting nominated for an Oscar is also a great achievement. These movies are full of India's culture, history, vital concepts of life, and religion. These movies will be remembered forever

Oscar-nominated movies:

Mehboob Khan's Mother India (1957) was selected as the first film for Best International Feature Film for the 30th Oscar Awards (known as Best Foreign Language Film prior to 2020) but lost to the "Nights of Cabiria'' (1957, Italian film) by one vote.

Film Saarash (1984) was nominated for 57th Academy Awards. Stories about a retired teacher and his wife's life struggle after the death of their son in New York. For the 61st Oscar Awards, Salaam Bombay (1989) was selected. It was directed by Meera Nayir and the film gives details about drugs, prostitution, and child labor. The most popular nominated Bollywood movie is Lagaan (2001) for the 74th Academy Awards and many more films were nominated for an Oscar but none of these films won an award. Only three Indian films have made the final five times: Mother India, Salam Bombay, and Lagaan but none of these films won an award.

Some critics blame problems on the Indian films. The stories of the movie are very melodramatic, with unnatural fights, song-and-dance, and colorful dresses where at the end of the movie a good guy wins every time. These formula films are good for entertainment, but they are not appreciated by Oscar judges. Excellent movies like Akhri Khat (1966), Manthan (1976), Guide (1962), and HeyRam (2000) were not successful to win the Oscar.

Writing with Fire (2022) was nominated for the 94th Best Documentary Feature. This documentary is about a Dalit female journalist Meera. She is a crime reporter for Khaber Lahariya. This documentary was beaten by The Summer of Soul (an American documentary).
