About Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan


Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was an Indian leader, philosopher, politician, and academic. He was India's second President and first Vice President. As a writer, Radhakrishnan dedicated his life to elucidating, defending, and promoting his religion, which he variously referred to as Hinduism, Vedanta, and the religion of the Spirit. He aimed to demonstrate the intellectual and ethical viability of Hinduism.


He frequently exhibits comfort with both Indian and Western intellectual settings, and his writing frequently incorporates both Western and Indian sources. As a result, Radhakrishnan has gained praise in academic circles as a representation of Hinduism in the West.



This outstanding educator also received the Bharat Ratna in 1954. The Indian government declared September 5 to be National Teachers' Day in 1962, the year Dr Radhakrishnan was born. Since then, September 5 has been designated as Teachers' Day.

1. Teacher’s Day in China


At China's National Central University, Teachers' Day was inaugurated in 1931. In 1932, the Chinese government gave it the go-ahead. Later in 1939, August 27 was designated as Teacher's Day in honour of Confucius' birthday; however, the declaration was revoked in 1951. The 10th of September was designated as Teacher's Day in 1985. Most Chinese people now want Confucius' birthday to be celebrated as Teachers' Day once more.



2. Reason behind India’s Teacher’s Day


In India, on September 5, Teachers' Day is observed in Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan's memory. Radhakrishnan, the nation's second president, was born on this day.



3. Teacher’s Day globally


While International Teachers Day is observed on October 5, Teacher's Day is observed in India on September 5. It's noteworthy to note that while Teachers' Day is observed globally, each country has designated a different day for it. This day might be a working day or a holiday depending on the nation.

In 1962, Dr Radhakrishnan was elected president of India. Some of his friends and students approached him and begged him to let them celebrate his birthday on September 5. In response, Dr S. Radhakrishnan said, "Instead of quietly celebrating my birthday, it would be my haughty privilege if September 5th is scrutinised as Teachers' Day." The fact that the Indian President made such a request demonstrates Dr S. Radhakrishnan's love and commitment to teachers. Since then, India has observed Teachers' Day on September 5th.



6. Teacher’s Day in US and Thailand


Teachers' Day is observed throughout the entire week in the US on the Tuesday of the first full week in May.


In Thailand, National Teacher's Day is observed on January 16 of each year. On November 21, 1956, introducing a resolution to this place led to the approval of Teachers' Day. In 1957, the inaugural Teacher's Day was observed. In schools, this day is a holiday.



7. Student’s love for their teacher 


All of Radhakrishnan's devoted students dragged a flower carriage from the Mysore University to the train station as he left to assume responsibility as a professor in Calcutta.


On the occasion of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan's birthday, Teachers' Day is observed (September 5). He was a superb educator. He also served as India's first Vice-President and second President after independence. Radhakrishnan, a Brahmin who was born on September 5th, 1888 in the Tamil Nadu town of Tirumani, received the Bharat Ratna in 1954.

The 28th of February is recognised as Teachers' Day in Oman, Syria, Egypt, Libya, United Arab Emirates, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Algeria, Morocco, and many more Islamic nations.
