Due to its enormous potential for growth and retention, India has over 600 million registered internet users. And most of them are on domestic platforms like Zee5, Voot, Hotstar, and MX Player.
Netflix, Amazon, and Disney+ Hotstar have been trying to develop unique Indian content to dominate viewing in 2022. It is a challenge, to be honest. Shockingly, this year saw significant advancements from Prime Video and Netflix primarily as a result of locally produced movies. No other platform has outperformed Netflix in terms of original content. It is how they have maintained a 46.1% market share of the demand for streaming originals in India.
Amazon increased the stakes by announcing in April 2022 that it will increase its investment in India over the following five years. The portal also revealed the arrival of 40 original films in Telugu, Tamil, and Hindi. Disney + Hotstar is India's best streaming platform, with more than 50 million Indian members, accounting for almost 40% of the entire Disney+ subscriber base. Therefore, we had a blast year with many hits from these 3 OTT platforms.
Here are the 6 best Indian originals from Netflix, Amazon, and Disney+ Hostar.
1. Delhi Crime Season 2 (Netflix)
Delhi Crime, which had a great debut season, comes back with a fresh case with enough depth to hold our interest. Five action episodes answer the sudden uptick in gruesome killings of elderly couples in Delhi's affluent South area.
The series' moral complexities are intertwined throughout the story and are based on Moon Gazer, a chapter from the book Khaki Files by former cop Neeraj Kumar. The fear is brought into living rooms by David Bolen's cinematography and Ceiri Torjussen's soundtrack. And of course, the brilliant performances are enhanced by the menacing surroundings.
2. Aranyak (Netflix)
The eight-episode thriller Aranyak explores human needs and transgressions under the guise of a horrific case of rape and murder. It is an intriguing combination of crime and politics with a dash of myth-making. The series was the most viewed on Netflix in India after attracting 22.49 million unique views.
The series, which takes place in a fictional town in Himachal Pradesh, features a variety of characters and stories. Aranyak is a slow-burn adventure that slowly draws you into a world where everyone seems to be keeping a secret. A mystery where greed and redemption are the dominant emotions.
3. Darlings (Netflix)
Darlings, Alia Bhatt's first film project, offers a unique perspective on the persistent problem of domestic abuse.
The story examines the lives of a quirky mother-daughter team. They find courage and love as they seek to find their place in the world while maneuvering through extraordinary circumstances. The story is set in a conservative lower-middle-class neighborhood in Mumbai. Will the two be able to achieve freedom despite all the social pressures? You'll have to watch the movie to find out.
4. Rudra: The Edge of Darkness (Disney+ Hotstar)
Rudra: The Edge of Darkness explores the minds of the detective hunting smart criminals and the criminals themselves. The series portrays the great personal cost that DCP Rudra Veer Singh (Devgn) incurs in his pursuit of criminals and killers, as well as the unlikely friendship he develops with brilliant sociopath Aliyah.
The city of Mumbai serves as more than just a setting for the vigilante acts of our hero in the television series. It also serves as the battlefield for the struggle between good and evil. Rudra is convinced that there is still love in the world despite the current darkness.
5. Panchayat (Amazon Prime Video)
Watch Abhishek Ji, also known as Sachiv Ji, as he navigates life in the Uttar Pradesh village of Phulera in Panchayat 2. Due to its straightforward and energizing plot, you will be captivated by the show. Clever writing and tasteful acting lure you. Along with Jitendra Kumar, the cast has veterans Neena Gupta and Raghubir Yadav, which adds to the intrigue.
6. Malgudi Days (Amazon Prime Video)
You'll be transported back to the 1980s by this insightful and well-crafted collection of short stories by renowned Indian novelist R.K. Narayan, with drawings by the talented artist R.K. Laxman. This timeless Hindi series evokes nostalgia and takes you back in time as it follows the lives of regular men and women from the little hamlet of Malgudi.
While watching these has been enjoyable, nothing comes close to StarPlus's Anupamaa, which dominates the list of most-watched TV shows in India. If you're unaware, Anupamaa tells the tale of an Indian housewife who battles with the decision to sacrifice her goals and aspirations for her family.
