It was adapted into a 2005 Hindi film by the same name, directed by Vishal Bhardwaj, which later won the national film award for best children’s film. In 2012, the novel was adapted into a comic by Amar Chitra Katha Publication.

The Blue Umbrella has, so far, gathered immense applause from readers and critics alike. This is a short novella but the kind of moral lessons it teaches us are simply overwhelming. The Blue Umbrella is a simple yet beautiful story that elegantly touches the core aspects of humanity and kindness.

About the Author

Ruskin Bond is an outstanding contemporary Indian writer of British descent. He authored inspiring children’s books and was granted the Sahitya Akademi Award to glorify his work of literature. At the age of 17 in London, he started to write his first novel, The Room on the Roof. The novel portrays the life of an orphaned Anglo-Indian teenager. He runs out to live with his friends as he flees the dictatorship of his strict guardian. The book has a substantial autobiographical element as it’s based on his actual incidents living in a small rented room on the roof in Dehradun. This novel gave him immense popularity and success.


This novel "Blue Umbrella" is also one of the prominent works of Ruskin Bond which portrays the very simple life of villagers in a way that they appear to be very heroic.

Plot

The story is of a 10-year-old poor mountain girl named Binya. She was living in a village named Garhwal near Tehri Road with her mother and her elder brother Biju. One day while herding her two cows back home, she stumbles upon some city people enjoying a picnic in the valley. She is thrilled to see them well-groomed and rich. She craves to be one like them and among many other things of theirs, a blue frilly umbrella catches her attention. This leads her to various circumstances and it also consists of an unexpected twist.
