K Drama Review: All of Us Are Deal (2002) High School Zombie Drama

About the Plot

A high school becomes ground zero for a zombie virus outbreak. Trapped scholars must fight their way out or turn into one of the rabid infected. It was a normal school day for the high school kids until a pupil returns from the science lab, infected by an unknown virus.

Coupled with strong performances and gifts behind the camera, All of Us Are Dead is a binge-worthy- good adventure sure to entertain horror and zombie suckers likewise- and indeed leave you wanting further.

Positive Aspects

The pace of the show is not slow. It's not super fast either. The pacing is done in such a way as to keep you engaged. You won't get bored. Every episode ends with a cliffhanger and you immediately want to know what happens in the next episode. It does a good job of keeping you on the edge of your seat.

The characters - the characters are familiar to all. A class president, a few athletic guys, a street-smart girl who's bad at studies, a class topper guy, a mean girl, a bully, the victims, etc. They're all classmates and their actions are all justifiable.

About the Writing

The writing is good for the most part. There's a lot of action, violence, and abuse so watch out for that. The family drama incorporated is gonna touch your heart. The characters know about zombies and how they behave. The characters are smart and keep the audience engaged with all the ideas they come up with.

About the Actors

Most of the actors are rookies. Most of the scenes are even taken in one shot. Special mention to Yoo In Soo who played the villain Gwinam. He was so brutal. Every time he appeared on screen you'd be scared.

The Negative Aspects

The duration- the show is 12 episodes long with each episode nearly an hour long. That's a lot of time to invest in a zombie series. I believe that the show could've been just 10 episodes long and that would've been perfect.

The show also seems kinda predictable at points. I would also call the series forgettable. It isn't something I would be thinking about for days or cherish forever. A lot of characters were killed off very early. It just felt too soon. Until the 3rd episode a lot of people who you think are going to make it to the end die.

Certain scenes/story arcs had great potential to be used in the story. The scene was just cut too fast before it became anything significant. Warning Spoiler: for example the scene where Onjo is in the school lab and there are a lot of mice around her legs. Did the mice bite her? Are the mice still there? What was the reason for showing the scene if it's meaningless?

The writing in some way lacked depth. They could have shown more about the friendships between the characters. Like we just see someone die and they just show a 20-sec montage of why they were an important person in our character's life. It just feels like they quickly want you to know they're best friends but you can’t connect to the friendship. There are topics like bullying, suicide, video pornography, and bad irresponsible teachers but there's no conclusion. You suffered but you can't do anything about it. It felt somewhat incomplete to me.

Imagine you're stuck. You didn't have food or water for about two days. Your friends and family are dying in your arms, yet you have the energy to fight, talk and scream. That was pretty unrealistic.

About the Ending

I'm still so frustrated about it and might stay the same if there's not a second season. Why did they have to kill my favorite character? But then they didn't even correctly tell whether he was dead or not because we never saw his dead body.

Spoiler Alert

What happens with Namra and others who turned zombies just like her? Will they never be able to get back to normal life? There are a lot of questions left unanswered. Also no Eunji and Gwinam fight.
