Synopsis - Non-Spoiler Alert
Gangs of Wasseypur is rustic, raw, and at times a visually gruesome depiction of the story of gangs at Wasseypur. It deals with the story of the conflict between two groups. The movie begins in pre-colonial Bihar with the story of Shahid Khan (Jaideep Ahlawat) and his rather nascent conflict with Ehsaan Qureshi (Vipin Sharma) and thereafter Ramadhir Singh (Tigmanshu Dhulia).
The movie dwells on this, as the conflict becomes generational and more intense. The movie has some characters that last the due course of the storyline while some don’t, like the character played by Piyush Mishra- Nasir Ahmed.
The first part of the movie ends with the death of Sardaar Khan essayed by Manoj Vajpayee following a prolonged tale of vengeance for the death of his father. The second part takes on from there with Faizal seeking vengeance for his father and brother’s death. The movie by its end leaves you biting your nails anticipating what has to come next.
About the Director
Anurag Kashyap directed the movie. He is known for his rustic closer-to-life depiction of stories. Best known for the Wasseypur franchise, Kashyap's movies are grim and political yet extremely real. He is known to be the pioneer of the indie scene in the country.
He has also worked as a producer, writer, and actor in several works. He has been conferred with several accolades, including four Filmfare Awards. For his contributions to film, the Government of France awarded him the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres
An adaptation?
The movie is not an adaptation as it is an original idea. However, the writer Zeishan Quadri asserted that the stories and instances in the movie seem to have been taken from real-life instances of gang warfare at Wasseypur. As Kashyap has himself told he could, like many of us, not digest how the story could be real.
Zeishan told plenty of tales, but the mafia's origin story—not gang warfare—was what captivated him the most. He claimed that telling the story through a few families was what piqued his interest, although doing so required a lengthier reel. We all know there is a mafia, but we don't really understand what they do, how they work, or why they do it. This is what the movie is about.
Themes Involved
The movie is grim, violent, and innately political. Yet it uses music at odd instances and also has a lot of intelligent comedy underlying it. A revenge saga most apparently, the movie uses this as a plot to seep into other issues as well. Black comedy is put to use to carve out the realism and perhaps make the intensity of the war milieu.
Public Verdict
The movie was not a very big hit at the box office. It did recover its production costs. It was, on the other hand, very well received critically. Internationally also the movie got good reviews. For the movie, Kashyap won the Jury Grand Prize for his direction at Asia Pacific Screen Awards, APFF Award for Best Art Direction received by Wasiq Khan.
At the International Indian Film Award (Technical Awards), Sham Kaushal won the award for best actor as also the award for best dialogues was received by Zeishan Quadri, Anurag Kashyap, Akhilesh Jaiswal, Sachin K. Ladia. The movie was of course nominated for the Cannes Film Festival where it was screened for the first time. Finally, the movie also won and had been nominated for several other awards including Filmfare.
In the 60th National Film Awards, the combined picture took home three prizes: Best Audiography, Re-recordists of the Final Mixed Track (Alok De, Sinoy Joseph, and Shreejesh Nair), and Special Mention for Acting (Nawazuddin Siddiqui). In the 58th Filmfare Awards, the movie took home four Filmfare Awards, including Best Film and Best Actress. The particular movie was labeled a failure at the box office.
What makes it a must-watch?
The movie is a must-watch for an array of reasons. The rusticity and the music are, of course, enticing but at the same time, the narrative is what keeps you hooked backed with solid performances. The story is not solely about two groups fighting but also about the individuals’ battles and domestic and romantic affairs. There is not much to say because the movie is an experience that has to be watched and felt.
The Bottom Line
The songs of the movie are a different universe altogether. The music brought in from diverse escapades of the country by Sneha Khanvilkar and written by Varun Grover and Piyush Mishra add a unique flavor to the tales. The humor is dark but spot-on, and the performances are rock solid. Piyush Mishra's narration adds another layer of depth to the story. The movie will definitely leave you with an unmatched and unforgettable experience.
