WPL – Women’s Premier League: A New Change To Women's Cricket Journey

Women’s premiere league also known as the TATA WPL for sponsorship reasons, is a women’s Twenty 20 cricket franchise league in India. It is owned and operated by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The year 2023 is going to witness the first edition of WPL.

First Announcement

It was in February 2022, when Ganguly announced plans to establish a women’s version of the Indian Premier League, the major men’s Twenty 20 franchise cricket competition in India., replacing the women’s T20 challenge.

The First Season Will Be Played In Mumbai

The first season is being played in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, with five franchises taking part.

Teams Participated

As of now, five teams are participating in WPL viz Delhi Capitals, Gujarat Giants, Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore and UP Warriorz. On 28th January 2023, the BCCI invited bids for the League’s title sponsorship rights until 2027. TATA group won the bid for an undisclosed amount. 

The Highest-Paid Player

Smriti Madhana set the record for the highest salary, with Royal Challengers Bangalore paying a hefty INR 3.4 crore to sign her on. The second highest salary which is INR 3.2 crore was paid by two teams.

This premiere league will change the women’s cricket destiny in India and will prove to be a revolution in the world of women’s cricket. It will provide a lot of opportunities for women and will be a boom to the BCCI financially as well.
