She was born in Kerala, and met with an accident when she was just 16. Unfortunately, doctors missed a small wound in her ankle and plastered it, which later got infected and there was no alternative left but to amputate her leg.
She subsequently regained some mobility with the help of a prosthetic Jaipur foot.
She returned to dancing after a gap of two years and performed in India, Saudi Arabia, United States, UK, Canada, UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain , Yemen and Oman and became one of the most popular and acclaimed classical dancers of the country.
Having performed Bharatanatyam internationally, Chandran has also been a known figure in the Indian television and film industry. Having received many awards for her amazing talent.
She was awarded the National Film Award – Special Jury Award for the Telugu film Mayuri which is based on her life at the 33rd National Film Awards in 1985. Chandran is an inspiration to many.
Girish Sharma
Imagine playing badminton with just one leg. Seems impossible right? But one of the most renowned badminton players Girish Sharma crossed all the beliefs and became a seven times national champion and in 2015, he was the world number 2 in both singles and doubles for para badminton players.
He lost his leg when he was a kid in a train accident. But the passion inside him did not stop him from becoming a badminton champion.
Well his dream firstly was to serve India as an army officer but disabled people aren't allowed to join army, so he served India as a player and represented it internationally.
With just one leg, he was successful in covering the court and dominating the game. He is a great inspiration for all those sports lovers who have lost their hope.
Bharat Kumar
Bharat Kumar is a para-swimmer. He was born with one hand by birth but his disability never came in between his passion and love towards sports.
When given the responsibility of rearing four buffaloes, Bharat used this as an opportunity to learn how to swim.
Bharat entered zonal, district, national and international level paralympics competitions and by 2010, he had 40 national and 2 international medals. However, in 2010, Bharat had a leg injury.
The bone of his heel was damaged and the operation would cost around Rs 90,000 which he could not afford.
Well, nothing can separate Bharat from sports. If not running then, he chose swimming as his career. Swimming brought Bharat back into competing and between 2011 to 2015, he has participated and won many more medals at the national level.
But later, due to the financial crisis, Bharat washes cars to make a living with the Rs 3,500 he gets paid for washing cars. Sometimes, he has needed to even sell his medals, to meet emergency expenses. People are donating money and he even asked the Prime Minister to help him out.
Until you believe in yourself, whether it is a physical problem or mental problem all can be overcome.
Inspiration can come from anywhere, and these disabled Indians are also inspiration for so many people. They proved that disability is only an excuse not the conclusion. Believe in yourself and chase your dreams. You have no reason to stop
