Amidst such war-like situations, the question that is capturing people’s minds is “what is this all about?” So let’s understand –

Introduction

The Israel-Palestine conflict is a long-standing and deeply rooted conflict between Israelis and Palestinians over issues related to territory, statehood, and the rights of both peoples.

The conflict between Israel and Hamas is centered primarily on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as well. Hamas is a Palestinian militant organization with political and social wings, and it has controlled the Gaza Strip since 2007.

The conflict has seen multiple rounds of violence and intermittent periods of relative calm, with root causes dating back decades.

Key points in the Israel-Hamas conflict

Historical Background

The conflict can be traced back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries when Jewish immigration to Palestine, then part of the Ottoman Empire, began to increase. The Zionist movement sought to establish a Jewish homeland in Palestine, leading to tensions between Jewish and Arab communities.

British Mandate (1920-1948)

After World War I, Palestine came under British control through the League of Nations mandate. Tensions between Jewish immigrants and the Arab population grew during this period.

United Nations Partition Plan (1947)

In 1947, the United Nations proposed a partition plan that would have divided Palestine into separate Jewish and Arab states, with Jerusalem as an international city. The plan was rejected by Arab leaders but accepted by Jewish leaders.

Creation of Israel (1948)

After World War II and the Holocaust, international support for a Jewish homeland led to the establishment of the state of Israel.

On May 14, 1948, the State of Israel was declared, leading to a war between Israel and several Arab states. This war resulted in the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians, many of whom became refugees.

Palestinian Territories

After the 1948 war, the West Bank and East Jerusalem came under Jordanian control, while the Gaza Strip was administered by Egypt. Israel controlled the rest of the territory allotted to it by the UN partition plan.

Six-Day War (1967)

In 1967, Israel captured the Gaza Strip, West Bank, and East Jerusalem, among other territories, during the Six-Day War. This marked the beginning of Israeli occupation in these areas.

Oslo Accords (1993)

The Oslo Accords were signed between Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), which led to limited self-rule for Palestinians in parts of the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

Rise of Hamas

Hamas emerged as a significant player in Palestinian politics during the 1990s and later took control of the Gaza Strip in 2007 after a violent conflict with the rival Palestinian Authority.

Periodic Conflict

The conflict between Israel and Hamas has witnessed several major military operations, including Operation Cast Lead (2008-2009), Operation Pillar of Defense (2012), and Operation Protective Edge (2014).

Rockets fired from Gaza into Israel territory and Israeli airstrikes on Gaza have been recurring features of the conflict.

Gaza Blockade

Israel imposed a blockade on the Gaza Strip in 2007, citing security concerns. The blockade has inflicted grave humanitarian hardships upon the residents of Gaza.

Settlements

The establishment of Israeli settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem has been a significant source of dispute. Many consider these settlements illegal under international law.

Ceasefire Attempts

Multiple attempts have been made to negotiate a peaceful resolution to the conflict, including the Camp David Accords, the Oslo Process, and the Annapolis Conference. However, these efforts have faced numerous obstacles, and a final peace agreement has not been reached.

Various international mediators, including Egypt, Qatar, and the United Nations, have tried to broker ceasefires and truce agreements, but these have often been short-lived.

Jerusalem and Gaza Unrest (2021) -

In May 2021, tensions flared in East Jerusalem, leading to clashes between Palestinians and Israeli security forces. This escalated into an 11-day conflict between Israel and Hamas, resulting in significant casualties and damage on both sides.

Current status

Once again the conditions between Israel and Hamas are taking a war-like turn in October 2023.

These conflicts started with the large-scale offensive invasion of Israel, led by Hamas on October 7, 2023. This resulted in Israel’s airstrikes on the Gaza strip on October 9, 2023.

The war-like situations and the deadly attacks of both the countries are taking the lives of innocent civilians.

In a nutshell -

The Israel-Hamas conflict remains unresolved, and efforts to reach a lasting peace have faced significant challenges, including disputes over territory, refugees' rights, and the status of Jerusalem.

International organisations and countries have been involved in mediation and peace efforts, but a comprehensive resolution to the conflict continues to be elusive.

The Israel-Hamas conflict's warlike situations and deadly attacks have brought immense suffering to innocent civilians on both sides. The conflict has resulted in civilian casualties, a humanitarian crisis, psychological trauma, displacement, and the loss of innocent lives.

It highlights the urgent need for a peaceful and lasting resolution to this longstanding conflict to prevent further human tragedy.
