Magpies, much like their close relatives the crows, should not be taken lightly.
Magpies are extremely smart, especially known for their ability to use tools, Vocalization, tricks, instigating tactics, and misdirecting skills to steal food from other animals like cats, dogs, and chickens.

Corvid Family

The Corvid family also known as Corvidae, is an extensive family of extremely smart birds found all over the world with members such as Crows, Ravens, Magpies, and Jays (simply referred to as the crow family). According to open data, currently, there are over 130 species.

Corvid birds are renowned for their high intelligence compared to other animals, to the point where magpies are even compared to great apes and dolphins known for their cognitive abilities such as social operating skills, cooperation, and influence from their surroundings.

Intelligence

Furthermore, in terms of their body weight and brain ratio compared to other birds, magpies have a much bigger brain in proportion. They also have great problem-solving skills making them excel at food and sustenance. Their traits include exceptional memory and self-awareness.

Vocalization and Singing

Magpies are known for their diverse vocalizations, ranging from melodious warbles to harsh chattering calls. Their vocal repertoire is extensive and includes mimicry of other bird species and even human-made sounds.

This vocal prowess not only serves as a means of communication but also showcases their remarkable adaptability and social complexity.

Magpie birds are known for loud and diverse vocalizations with song-singing voices and coarse chattering calls. Similar to some of the parrot species but less in comparison magpies can mimic other birds and human-like sounds. This helps to communicate and adapt to their environment.

Loud Birds in Urban Environments

In urban settings, these birds are often recognized for their mating calls which can be soothing and sometimes quite distracting. Their assertive sounds are used for territorial purposes by establishing a means to communicate with their mates during offspring season and as a warning.

Tricksters

The most intriguing part about corvids and magpies is their clever ruse of trickery to be more resourceful, whether it be food or shelter. Their deceptive nature made them adapt and survive in the harsh world of predators by outwitting them such as biting a hind of dogs and stealing food.

These enigmatic birds are observed and documented by researchers while they are busy utilizing their tacts(who’s more cunning now?). Although the pandamonium species of parrots are best known for their mischievous attitude and wittiness, magpies of corvids are the trickster mob.

Fun Facts

The origin of the word mag from Magpies comes from the name Margaret, associated with a common girl’s name from an earlier time(popular during the 11th and 19th centuries). It is also quite distasteful considering the bird’s name alludes to loud women.

Magpies from the northernmost parts of the Eurasian continent are called Eurasian Magpie or common Magpie and the scientific name for it is PICA PICA (One Piece creator Oda-san might’ve been inspired by this and named Doffy’s crew member)

Symbolism

The Magpie bird’s characteristics, traits, and features brought a strange ordeal on them. Due to their clever and cunning natures, some consider these poor birds as bad omen, which is mainly derived from Western/Irish folklore.

Final Thoughts

Regardless of how the interpretations of the Magpies being a sign of misfortune or even good luck, Magpie birds are seen as intelligent family members of the corvid family with a reputation for being tricksters to adapt to nature.
