Saptha Saagaradache Ello Movie Review - The Beauty of Traversing Across the Seven Oceans

This article is regarding one of the most introspective yet uniquely-made love stories of 2023. Coming from the Kannada film industry which was going through a pretty big financial setback in the box-office despite the humungous box-office success in 2022 owing to pan-indian film which have generated tremendous revenue worldwide such as KGF Chapter 2 and Kantara. The name of this movie is called “Sapta Saagaradache Ello: Side A” or in simple terms, it refers to the journey across the seven oceans.

A Fragile Tale Between Love and Longing

Saptha Saagaradache Ello begins as a tale of melancholy for its primary characters, Manu and Priya played by Rakshit Shetty and Rukmini Vasanth. As the title suggests, the story haunts the viewers with the future which they wanted to have beyond the contemporary seven oceans. It delves into the infinite depths of love between Manu and Priya and destiny takes an unexpected turn in their heart-warming yet beautiful tale of melancholy and doom. Pretty simple as a story, right? Manu, in a haste takes a decision which in turn affects both their lives. Both are a middle-class couple with dreams quite big yet they come crashing down due to their own choices. The story reminds us of the fragility of life and how one wrong decision can change the course of many.

A Technical Wonder

Directed by Hemanth M Rao, this is his second film with the actor/producer Rakshit Shetty after their 2016 stint, Godhi Banna Saadharana Mykattu(GBSM). The movie in general has to be one of the most technically well-made films of 2023 owing to its rich production values, outstanding cinematography, impressive direction, wonderful sound design by the legendary MR Rajakrishnan and immersive music. With this, Hemanth has cemented himself to be a master in capturing profound emotions in the simplest yet heartfelt manner. He had already achieved with this 2016 debut film, Godhi Banna Saadharana Mykattu(2016) which revolves around the missing case of an Alzheimer’s patient, played by one of the legendary actors of Indian Cinema, Mr. Ananth Nag.

The cinematography of Advaitha Gurumurthy and the music from Chanranraj go hand-in-hand with each other. The camerawork from Advaitha effectively captures the beauty of the surroundings of Manu and Priya whether it is the pink blossoms of the city or the public transport. Despite the movie being set in 2010s Bengaluru, it effectively captures the beauty of the city of those days and the horrors of jail along with it’s long-lasting trauma on the human psyche. Charanraj’s music beautifully complements the rich camerawork from Advaitha and the outstanding direction of Hemanth. Ranging from the simple yet peaceful melody from the title track to the heart-breaking tune of doom, Saagarada Aache, he has wonderfully evoked the pain, happiness, sorrow, longing, desires of Manu and Priya who are beautifully enacted by the excellent acting performances from both the lead performers, Rakshit Shetty and Rukmini Vasanth. This is Rukmini starring in her second film after the 2017 film Birbal and she has successfully cemented her legacy into the hearts of the audience.

Unfolding Grief in Shades of Hope

The movie has a well-supportive cast which could not have been possible without the likes of brilliant actors such as GopalKrishna Deshpande, Sharath Lohitashwa, Achyuth Kumar, Avinash , Pavithra Lokesh etc. Achyuth is an artisan of sublime emotions and has effectively proved this through his shady yet manipulative character portrayed in the film, Prabhu who took a major turn in the direction of the story. If you are into love stories which are beautifully yet not very complicated to understand then Sapta Saagaradache Ello:Side A might be one of those you have to watch out for. This is a collection of hope and pain which can only be truly experienced once unless you have the guts for a rewatch. As an avid movie watcher, I got gutted in the end! In the era of mindless commercial travesties lurking around as of 2023, this stands as a beacon of hope for the audience hungry for stories on Love. Its mix of romance and engaging storytelling promises an experience that resonates long after the credits roll. Watch it but at your own risk.
