Gulzar Ahmed: Your Career is Not a Sprint—It’s a Marathon (Founder Career Unfiltered, 202K Followers)

“Your career isn’t built on shortcuts—it’s built on clarity, skills, and the patience to play the long game.”

Q. You’ve worked across BFSI, Ed-Tech, Fintech, SaaS, EOR consulting, and more. Can you walk us through your journey? How did these experiences shape the coach you are today?

My journey has been anything but straightforward. Each industry taught me something unique. BFSI drilled in discipline and compliance, Ed-Tech helped me understand how people really learn and grow, Fintech showed me agility and innovation, SaaS gave me lessons in scalability, and EOR consulting exposed me to the complexities of managing a global workforce.

Every role sharpened a different skill, i.e, problem-solving, customer focus, and strategic thinking. Today, as a coach, I bring all of that together. I don’t just see someone through the lens of one industry; I see the bigger picture of where their skills can actually take them. That’s the advantage of having walked across so many domains.

Q. Your brand is called Career Unfiltered. What does “unfiltered” career advice mean to you, and what filtered advice do you think job seekers should ignore?

For me, “unfiltered” means cutting through the noise. There’s too much fluffy advice out there, things like just apply to more jobs or follow your passion, and the money will follow.

Those lines sound good, but they don’t help when someone is stuck. I’d rather tell them plainly: your resume isn’t working, your skills need updating, or your strategy has to change. It may sting, but at least it’s actionable and helps.

The filtered advice to ignore is anything that oversimplifies careers. Growth is messy; it takes trial and error, and sometimes hard feedback. You need truth, not sugarcoating and motivational one-liners.

Q. You often share tactical resources like Big 4 alternatives or consulting programs. How do you curate these, and how do they fit into your larger coaching model?

I curate based on gaps I see in the market. A lot of students blindly chase Big 4 or MBB firms without realizing there are equally strong firms or niche programs where they might actually thrive. So my goal is to broaden their vision.

In my coaching, these resources are not just links or lists; they’re door-openers. They show people that there’s more than 3 or 4 brand names to aim for. And when someone starts exploring those overlooked paths, they end up making more informed choices. In my coaching model, that’s the first step toward clarity, seeing opportunities you didn’t even know existed.

Q. With AI tools like ChatGPT changing the hiring landscape, where do you see the role of a human career coach in the next few years?

AI is fantastic at execution; it can draft resumes, analyze job descriptions, and even simulate interviews. But here’s the thing: AI doesn’t understand your values, priorities, or long-term vision.

Career decisions aren’t just about keywords; they’re about the kind of life you want to build. That’s where a human coach steps in. We bring perspective, accountability, and personalization.

I actually see AI and coaches working hand in hand. AI will do the heavy lifting, while coaches focus on the deeper work strategy, clarity, and decision-making. In short, AI gives you information, but a coach helps you turn that information into transformation.

Q. Finally, what is the one core message you’d like professionals and students to take away from your journey and your work?

Your career is not a sprint—it’s a marathon. Don’t fall into the trap of comparing yourself constantly or chasing quick wins. Focus on building skills, gaining clarity, and developing resilience.

If there’s one lesson my own journey has given me, it’s this: patience (sabr), the right strategy, and honest guidance will always take you further than shortcuts ever will.
