Megan Rakesh Interview
Q. You’re known as “meganandthemiracles,” and from cover videos to live performances, you’ve built a unique musical presence, how would you introduce yourself beyond the name?
I'd probably introduce myself as a girl who's absolutely MAD about music and has Big Dreams..
Q. Starting so young and independent now, what was the most pivotal moment that made you realize music could be more than just a hobby?
This happened when I was 4 when my dad was performing a gig with his band and were taking a break, and I saw the stage and I had this feeling in my heart 'I wanna sing' so I went up there and sang my heart out and that is when I realized 'performing music is what makes me happy' and this is what I want to do for the rest of my life.
Q. Your covers range from Whitney to AC/DC , what draws you to such diverse artists, and how do you make their songs your own?
From Whitney Houston to AC/DC, I feel like music is something so profound and beautiful that you can't put it in a box. At the end of the day, I just want to have fun on stage performing the songs that truly make me happy, and making the songs my own happens truly with spontaneity especially when I am jamming on stage with the band or in the studio.
Q. With tons of live streams early in your journey, how did performing live shape your confidence and connection with your audience?
I've been performing ever since I was 4 years old, live streams, live on stage. It never really mattered. I've always loved being a performer.
I've always seen the stage as a second home.
Q. Growing up in Bengaluru and now reaching global listeners, how has your city shaped your musical identity?
I've performed all over Bangalore for as long as I can remember and it's always been loads of fun. I feel like every concert is an opportunity to have a great time as well as get ready for my dream goals like Wembley and Madison Square Garden, etc.
Q. What’s the most surprising or heartfelt fan interaction you’ve had that still inspires you today?
I remember last year, I performed a show and walked out feeling the pure joy of the gig and I met this sweet little girl with autism and she was giggling and smiling and she told me "I loved how you sang. I loved your songs" and while I was playing with her and telling her jokes, I could hear her parents saying "She never smiles like this. This is amazing". As I hugged her, I thought, this is the true power of music. If it has the magic to make someone smile or make them happy, even if it's just for a moment, then that's all that matters. I've always dreamt of filling my listeners hearts with joy with my music regardless of the genre
Q. Balancing school, creativity, and performing takes discipline, what does your creative routine look like, and how do you manage it all?
I make a lot of to-do lists because I get a feeling of accomplishment whenever I cross out something and it's productive too. I make the time for music as well as learning. It's always more fun that way
Q. When did you first pick up guitar?
I picked it up around two and a half years ago when I saw Shania Twain sitting on her porch singing "Who's bed have your boots been under" just strumming a couple of simple chords. I looked at her, amazed and thought 'Wow! Maybe I can do that too', so I picked up my first chords, my first few solos and then I started writing. I really started focusing more on how to perform with my instrument for the past 7 months. It's been a great journey and I'm just beginning.
Q. Could you tell us about headlining Hornbill Festival with the legendary band Parikrama?
It still feels surreal thinking about it to this day. I honestly feel so honoured that Subir Malik of Parikrama, the manager and the insanely talented keyboardist would even think about me in their time of need, and they trusted me, a 13-year-old, with an ENTIRE setlist in the span of two days. It was a ball performing with them. I even learnt how to tackle all the challenges as a touring artist. IT WAS AWESOME
Q. For the fun one, if you could perform a duet with any musician, who would you choose and what would you sing?
I would LOVE to work with Billy Sheehan, the bass player of Mr B.I.G, one of my most favourite bands ever. He's always been so inspiring, ever since I first listened to their self-titled debut album 10 years ago. It would be an absolute honour to write a song with him and perform with him.
