Buttered: I Don’t Let the Algorithm Decide My Joy (Art & Storytelling, 183K Followers)

“164K+ people follow the art, words, and whimsy of @buttered_official — yet no one knows who they are. And that’s exactly the point.”

Q. Buttered Official has become a name many creators recognise, but few know the person behind it. How did this journey begin, and who is the creative mind behind Buttered?

It actually started on YouTube. I was making long-form videos, story-driven and reflective and sharing snippets on TikTok and Instagram. The response was slow at first, until one of my short clips about fashion and food unexpectedly took off.

That moment shifted everything. I realised that short-form content wasn’t just faster, it was more direct, more intimate. It allowed me to say a lot with less. That’s when Buttered started to find its rhythm. I still love long-form storytelling, and I’ll probably return to it soon. But right now, short-form feels alive; it’s where I can experiment, play, and connect the most.

Q. You’ve kept your personal identity largely behind the scenes. Is that a conscious creative choice, or something that evolved with time? What freedom or challenges come with staying anonymous online?

Yes, it’s completely intentional. I want people to see my work, not me. The anonymity makes it feel more magical—like the art exists on its own.

There’s a certain freedom in being faceless. I don’t have to perform a personality or curate an image. It’s just me and the ideas. Some people get curious and try to guess who I am, but I like keeping that secret alive. It keeps the focus where I want it—on creativity, not identity.

At the same time, anonymity has its challenges. You don’t get the same kind of “creator validation” others might get from public recognition. But that’s also the beauty of it—it reminds me that I’m doing this for the art, not the applause.

Q. Your work blends design, art, and career advice. What core belief drives everything you create, the one thread connecting your art and your words?

I think people forget that creativity should be fun.

We live in such a high-pressure world that everyone’s chasing productivity, perfection, and performance. I want my work to be the opposite of that. I want it to feel soft, curious, and a little whimsical.

Even though it takes privilege to live freely, I still believe everyone deserves a touch of play in their day. My content is my way of bringing that—reminding people that art doesn’t always have to be serious. Sometimes, it can just make you breathe easier for a moment.

Q. Growing to over 164K followers isn’t luck. What key shift or decision helped Buttered stand out in the crowded art and design space?

Connection. Always connected.

I think the reason Buttered stands out is that I listen. My followers are smart, funny, curious, and endlessly creative. They inspire me just as much as I might inspire them. I read their comments, their questions, their jokes; it all feeds back into my work.

It’s not about chasing trends or following formulas. It’s about having a conversation, one post at a time. That’s what makes this community special: it feels human.

Q. How do you manage the pull between creating for passion and creating for the algorithm? Has your approach changed as your audience has grown?

I don’t let the algorithm decide my joy.

I create what I want, when I want. If a piece doesn’t perform well, I think of it as a lost gem, a secret that only a few people in the universe were meant to find. There’s something beautiful about that idea.

It’s funny because I actually use content insights for my work, so I know how important data is. But for Buttered, I try to let go. I want the process to stay fun and spontaneous. If my content reaches millions, great. If it reaches a few hundred people who truly feel something, that’s just as magical.
