Sahil Mehta: Be Shameless, Crack Bad Jokes (Reel Creator, 126K Followers)

Sahil Mehta Interview

Sahil Mehta

My philosophy has been simple, to just make everyday things & funny situations into something that would be relatable to every single person

Q. You describe yourself as 'Mistake Repeater' that’s a very self-aware tagline. How did this philosophy shape your journey from a casual reel creator to a verified comedian with a 100K+ audience?

'Mistake Repeater' is just a funny tagline my AI Chatbot has described myself as. But my philosophy has been simple, to just make everyday things & funny situations into something that would be relatable to every single person. I make content in a way that is creative yet very simple, something that not alot of people are doing currently.

Q. Your content often comes from everyday situations cafes, college campuses, random public space yet it never feels scripted. What’s your creative process for transforming a simple interaction into a punchline?

I love it when the audience looks at something and just laughs & relates to it. My content doesnt feel scripted because it isn't. I like getting organic reactions of people on simple things.

A candid take on random things. My creative process is very simple - I like to observe and sit with my friends. At a time when every single thing is there on the internet, it is very difficult to get new ideas that haven't been done before! So its very simple- Observe! Trying finding a niche & it will reach the right audience.

Q. You’ve hosted interviews where you don’t just joke you build rapport quickly. What are the key elements of authentic on-camera conversations, especially when the person in front of you is a stranger?

The first important thing is ENERGY, the energy you give off to the stranger is the most important part! You need to make them feel comfortable. Remember this - you are always open around your friends & very real with them. Make the person you are interviewing less camera conscious, comfortable & make them your friend. Be positive & SMILEY ALL THE TIME.

Q. Many creators today lean on production quality or aesthetics. You rely heavily on personality and spontaneity. Was this a conscious strategy or a natural evolution?

A lot of creators rely on production & aesthetic, my logic since the start has been very simple - Be authentic, show your true personality because in the long-term people will remember you more then your content.

So I feel making content that doesn't look too, difficult makes the audience feel & more connected to you! So yes its a natural evolution, but I am like this as a person as well.

Q. You’ve navigated both travel-based content (Thailand, Sri Lanka) and context-heavy Indian content like Mahakumbh. How do you adapt humor to different cultural spaces without crossing lines?

I love this question. India is the most populated country & we have people here from all kinds of cultures, values and many more things. Travel based content is always about either showing fun things around with your friends or showing the true Indian Culture.

Like in Mahakumbh- it was happening after 133/125 years (not sure) So as a creator its my duty to give/show the audience what they deserve & to do something out of the box. I made a five day series where I travelled across & near Kumbh Mela for free and showed the true Indian nature.

Q. The Mumbai creator ecosystem is crowded and competitive. At what moment did you feel your voice was distinct enough to break through the noise and what metrics or signals told you that?

There is competition everywhere & being a creator in a very crowded place gives & brings very healthy competition to your mind, you always need to put on your A game and give the best content out there!

I feel personality & authenticity is always a plus point. I feel when people recognise you even when you haven't been that active in the past 2/3 months & they come and tell you about your content, is indicative of my distinct voice.

Q. We often see creators burn out after rapid growth. How do you manage the pressure of being consistently funny, especially when humor is your brand currency?

The pressure is always about posting regularly and posting good content. The moment you start taking it as a business & not like a creative process is when the burn out happens. So observe! Go out, meet your friends & consume content. Have fun while making content there will be less burnouts. I am a jolly dude! I love hanging out with my friends and that helps me a lot.

Q. Pocket Aces manages you one of India’s biggest digital entertainment ecosystems. What were the most surprising things you learned after shifting from solo creator to professionally managed talent?

Having a big agency have your back is a boon for sure, they have the resources to make things happen for you!! Things were never surprising because before I became a creator I was a talent manager at Nofiltr Social for 3 years & I managed some big names in the Influencer Industry. So I knew pretty much all about it. But having an agency manage you gets you to places which being a solo creator sometimes becomes difficult.

Q. Your 'bad jokes, bunny teeth' line is humor layered with self-branding. How important is vulnerability in comedy when audiences today instantly judge and attack online?

Since I was kid I always had a bunny teeth & people have often found it cute- same way I always cracked bad jokes, but the bunny teeth smile always made funnier for the people! But yeah comedy starts if you can laugh at yourself and take jokes. You already are a step ahead than alot of people.

Q. Short-form reels dominate, but you have a YouTube presence too. How do you decide what idea becomes a 30-second bit versus a longer conversational or hosting format?

Short form content has reduced peoples' attention span, so as a creator it becomes difficult for us to find out what works & what not as long form content. But future is in making long videos.

Showing personality & being authentic, showing a voice. Always makes a better community in future content creation is going to be about - community based creators more then follower based.

Q. From what we see, you’re often in youth-heavy spaces: colleges, students, street interviews. What insights have you gained about Gen Z humor vs Millennial humor?

I am a GenZ creator, so me being in Youth heavy spaces makes people feel I am one of them with a voice, so the content I make is heavily inspired by & is for the GenZ or the millennials or anyone who is interested in GenZ or like them.

GenZ humour is basically the new age short form humour something we also call as RageBait! I feel like GenZs love something they heavily relate to, they love it when people have a different opinion and can take a stand & do everything but in a very creative manner.

Q. Take us behind one of your viral videos. Was it planned, accidental, or completely improvised and what did that teach you about audience psychology?

My first every viral video was something I made about a group of friends! That did tell me one thing that audience loves to see something that they either wanna try or it has been done with them. A quick relatable laugh and something to share it with other people

Q. Your persona feels approachable, not influencer-like. Was there ever a moment when you were tempted to become more 'polished,' and why did you resist?

I have always been approachable & I love talking to new people make new friends understand about them, get to know their perspective and I love it when people approach me.

I am literally the same person on and off the camera so there was never any moment where I thought I had to be polished because I have been always been welcoming.

Q. If Sahil from 2019 met Sahil from today, what one mistake would you proudly tell him to repeat again?

One mistake I would tell would be 'please keep cracking bad jokes, take all the risks and take evey opportunity you see'. Be shameless like you have always been!
