Mananveer Singh: Entering the Industry Without Any Connections Was a Challenge (Punjabi Singer, Composer)

"Entering this industry without a godfather or any connections was a challenge in itself. When you move to a city like Mumbai as a newcomer, people often try to exploit, mislead, or misuse you—and I experienced all of that."

Q. To start, tell us a bit about your journey from discovering music in your early years to becoming a singer-composer with a growing audience today.

My musical journey began in boarding school. On the last Sunday of every month, we used to have co-curricular activity days. One day, a student happened to hear me singing in the bathroom and told our teacher, saying I sang really well and should perform.

I was suddenly put on the spot. My teacher asked me to sing in front of nearly 300 students. When I finished, and everyone started clapping, I got goosebumps. That moment changed everything for me. It was then that I realised this is what I want to do for the rest of my life. From that day onwards, my musical journey truly began.

Q. Your Instagram describes you as “manifesting the dream.” How do you define that dream today, and how has it evolved since your debut?

The reason I wrote “manifesting the dream” is because I’ve always envisioned myself performing in front of thousands—and lakhs—of people around the world. I want to represent my culture, my country, and my beliefs through my music. I dream of becoming an icon, someone who leaves a legacy.

Right now, I feel like I’m living one of the most beautiful phases of that dream. I’m in the middle of the hustle, the climb towards the top—and honestly, that journey itself is the most beautiful part.

Since the day I stepped into Mumbai, this dream has shaped me immensely. It has transformed me into a much better, more grounded person, and continues to push me to grow every single day.

Q. How have your roots in Punjabi tradition influenced your sound, especially in tracks that blend contemporary beats and hip-hop elements?

Absolutely, my roots play a huge role in my sound. I’m trained in Hindustani classical music, and even during my training, I was always deeply interested in fusion. I loved mixing classical elements with modern sounds like hip-hop and trap.

Coming from a Punjabi background, my family and community are very rooted and spiritual. We grew up with bhajans, kirtans, and traditional music, which is the purest form of Punjabi musical expression. When you take that traditional sound and fuse it with hip-hop or contemporary beats, something incredibly powerful is created.

My Punjabi roots have definitely encouraged me to blend tradition with modern music, and so far, the response has been amazing.

Q. What’s one challenge you’ve faced as an independent or rising artist, and how did overcoming it shape your artistic identity?

There have been many challenges. To begin with, I come from a completely business-oriented family. On both my maternal and paternal sides, there hasn’t been a single artist before me. I’m the first one to pursue music professionally.

Entering this industry without a godfather or any connections was a challenge in itself. When you move to a city like Mumbai as a newcomer, people often try to exploit, mislead, or misuse you—and I experienced all of that.

But the idea of “manifesting the dream” was always at the back of my mind. No matter what happened—whether it was the wrong people, setbacks, or even doubts from my own circle—I kept fighting. That journey shaped me into a strong individual with a never-give-up mindset.

All those struggles were necessary. They taught me how important this dream truly is and how committed I am to achieving it. They shaped me not just as an artist, but as a human being.

Q. If your next track had to be themed around a food, a city, or a meme, what would the title be and why?

This is a fun one. There’s a popular meme that goes, “Darrta kyun hai, Singh? Waheguru Khalsa, Waheguru Fateh.” It roughly translates to, “Why are you scared, Singh?” or “How are you doing, Singh?”

I’d love to make a song around that idea because it’s funny, very Punjabi at heart, and also inspirational at the same time. It has the potential to be playful yet empowering, and that’s something I’d really enjoy exploring musically.
