Lavanya's Interview
Q. Lavanya, let us start with your journey. You began creating content at an early age, what first made you pick up a camera and start sharing your life and experiences online?
I would owe it to my mom! She used to make sewing videos in the early days of YouTube back in 2013-14, and watching her film and edit, I used to get really inspired. So, I forced her to make me a channel too. My earliest videos when I was in 7th grade were all done with her help. I used to watch OG YouTubers like Bethany Mota and Zoella and wanted to make videos like them. At the time, we had no idea it was even possible to make money from it; I did it purely for the joy of creating. I wanted to use my channel as an outlet for my creativity and share my life. That is why I have been able to do it for more than a decade now. Because my motivation does not depend on the end results or the byproduct of it, it is entirely for the process itself. Creating content is therapeutic for me.
Q. Over the years, your content has evolved along with you. How do you decide what parts of your personal journey, interests, or experiences you want to bring to your audience?
From what I have noticed, people might not always remember the exact information or content in your video, but they will remember how it made them feel. So, I always want people to leave my video feeling something positive. That is why I always try to put out content that feels uplifting, motivating, or productive, for them to leave having learned something new. However, it does not mean I just share the wins. I try to share my failures or bad days as well so that it does not create an unfair comparison. Of course, I choose to keep some parts of my life to myself, but as for the parts I do share, I keep it as real, authentic, and positive as I can.
Q. As your audience has grown, how has your relationship with content creation changed? Do you still create with the same excitement you had when you first started?
Considering I started right from my school days, my audience has practically grown up with me. Hence, we go through various stages of life together, school, board exams, college, adulthood, etc. That creates relatability and a sense of comfort. But I do try to evolve according to changing times and trends, also keeping in mind the kind of content my audience reacts well to. Since my content is about my lifestyle, the core is always me; just the format or packaging evolves with current changes on the Internet. And I am still super excited about putting out a new video every time. Each content piece that I make is like my child, my time, effort, and love go into each of them. So, I am always excited to post a new video.
Q. Being a creator while also navigating your own studies and ambitions cannot always be easy. How have you learned to balance creating content with everything else happening in your life?
There is no secret mantra. I think since I have been doing it for so long, it just comes naturally to me. It is a part of my life now. So, no matter what I do in life, I manage to be available for content creation. I think setting a routine helps. When you get accustomed to dedicating a part of your day to something, it becomes easy over time. Your time management skills improve. And I think I have gotten good at it after all these years, balancing content with school, college, competitive exam preparation, etc. This does not mean I have perfectly mastered it. It is a phase. Sometimes I feel unmotivated or have slow and unproductive days. But it is important to bounce back and keep up the routine long-term. So, building a habit, a system, is the key.
Q. With such a young audience watching your journey, do you ever feel a responsibility to be mindful about the kind of message you put out? How do you handle that responsibility while still being yourself?
Of course, I understand the responsibility, and therefore I am always mindful about the content I put out and the message that it propagates. My natural self already aligns with the kind of message I want to put across: positivity, productivity, and broad-mindedness. So, I do not think I have to pretend or put up a certain act. However, I try to be sensitive and empathetic to others' sentiments while presenting my most authentic self at the same time.
Q. And finally, let us end on a lighter note. Is there a book, story, series, or movie that you have personally loved and would genuinely like to recommend to our audience?
I always love female-centric movies and books that involve women branching out, finding themselves, and reclaiming their freedom! Hence, movies like English Vinglish, Queen, and Secret Superstar, and books like The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and works by authors like Taylor Jenkins Reid, are some of my favourite ones.
