Observation and Implementation Are Two Pillars That Help in Refining Aesthetics - Krishna Rathi

Graphic Designing is not just about ideation, conceptualization and implementation; you also need to have a good understanding of technology. You might have to learn animation or video editing to keep up with the trends.

1. When and how did you choose to be a graphic designer?

Since childhood, sketching was my hobby, but it took a backseat when I started preparing for CA. But, in the first year of my articleship, I started hyperrealistic sketching and also explored photography. While sketching taught me patience, photography refined my observation skills. I've always loved to challenge myself and take up new things, this was the time when digital art was picking pace and I decided to give it a shot by the second year of my articleship.

I made a few designs on the current topics and when I realised the power that I could create awareness and educate people through art, I wanted to do more of it. And, so the journey of Graphic Designing started.

2. What is the role and scope of work for a graphic designer?

Graphic Designing is a field with many applications. As for me, who is more into creating minimal topical content and brand strategies; I need to keep myself updated about the happenings in my surroundings.

Along with this a know-how of proper tools to execute the ideas and developing a thinking pattern for effective implementation. Graphic Designing is about communication, the more your designs speak; the higher impact you can create

3. What are some of the tools and software that a graphic designer must be aware of?

It is completely subjective as it is based on one's operating system. I use Affinity Designer, Adobe Illustrator and Procreate

4. How in your opinion has this profession changed over the years?

This is a very fast-pacing world. You need to be a quick learner and adapt to changes; so you can ensure quality content. Initially, people would spend months and years working on a single piece of art, but when it comes to graphic designing these days; efficiency is measured by how fast you come up with a concept and implement the design. Months of satisfaction has now changed to instant gratification.

5. Do you often have to keep upskilling yourself?

Absolutely yes! Graphic Designing is not just about ideation, conceptualization and implementation; you also need to have a good understanding of technology. You might have to learn animation or video editing to keep up with the trends.

Along with this, you need to know the basics of marketing and branding too. Recently, Instagram introduced Reels, and as a graphic designer you had to upskill yourself so you could present yourself differently and standout.

6. Your favourite book and why?

The surrounding is my favourite book. What's happening around me is itself every page of the book of my life. There are many experiences that are unwritten, unpublished and I'm discovering them. I'm not tied to one particular book, I learn from everything that's around me.

7. How can one develop a keen sense for design and aesthetics?

It is about perpetual learning. Constructive criticism also plays a vital role in shaping skills. Observation and implementation are two pillars that help in refining aesthetics.

Throw in, consistent practice and keep challenging yourself, have an attitude of learning and you can see the results.
