He took Rick Riordan as his pen name and he is known for his book series like Magnus Chase trilogy and a pentalogy of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, that is about a teenager named Percy Jackson discovers he is a son of the Greek god Poseidon and hence making him a demigod.

About the Book

Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters is the second book in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series – written by Rick Riordan and published in the year 2006. The story of this book is the continuation of the last book which means it starts from where the Lightning Thief left. In the previous book, we saw our protagonist was fighting for the safety of his mother and friends in Half-blood camp, in this book Percy, is fighting not just for his friends but also for the safety of the whole world.

This time, Percy teams up with Annabeth, Clarissa, and Tyson on a journey to Sea of Monsters to retrieve the Golden Fleece to save the mystical tree that protects the half-blood camp and also rescue his best friend Grover from an evil cyclops.

At the beginning of the story, we see Percy was back to his mother in New York and after returning home he went straight to Half-blood camp. From here the story is fast-paced and the plot takes the story away from New York and the half-blood camp. Percy and his friends spend days exploring the Sea of Monsters, in their journey one can notice that Riordan has blended Greek mythology with our modern life seamlessly and acceptably.

Lightning Thief had some great action and even greater plot but Sea of Monsters blows it out. From the opening scene where Percy is having nightmares about the destruction of the school gym in a game of dodgeball with giant monsters and nightmares about a kidnapped drag Queen Satyr. After all, these incidences that happened, facing them gave a new direction to Percy and he got amazing character development.

Percy Jackson is no longer that disabled type of guy we first saw in The Lightning Thief, he is now filled with a lot more confidence and is starting to understand the importance of his position and heritage. This book worked a lot on the emotional relationship of its characters, Poseidon and Percy, Percy and Annabeth as well.

The introduction of a new character to the team is also a good choice to make the story interesting. Tyson, son of cyclops and half-brother to Percy joined the camp and Percy in his journey. Grover got less time in this story because of his kidnapping and that makes sense if a new character is being introduced.

The further story overflows with suspense, adventure, and thrill that must be enjoyed while reading the book itself and not just by a summary.

Review

This is the second book of the series the Percy Jackson and the Olympians – written by Rick Riordan. The story for the book was already decided because it’s a sequel to a previous book The Lightning Thief, Rick just had to continue the story from where he left in the previous book. The characters were already created and are well explained in the previous part but here in this book characters are shown much mature and confident, they all got some amazing and much-needed development.

The best part of the book is that the plot was completely different, even the title of the book says itself about the story and the plot. This book is set in a different place and not just in half blood camp, this change of scenery helps the readers to stick to the book and to read it without any break.

The mixture of intense description, danger, action, and comedy as well is so précised that we can get an idea about the excellence of the writer in story-telling. Rick Riordan has not only made these characters instant classic that everyone appreciates but also narrated this masterpiece perfectly which is worthy of its predecessor.

This book is a must for those who seek adventure, romance, comedy, mystery altogether. The joy that originated while reading the Lightning Thief will be in continuation while reading this book. I’ll highly recommend everyone to read this book once and especially to those who have already completed The Lightning Thief.
