Initially, Bitcoin was intended to work as a decentralised digital replacement to cash. More specialised currencies like Ripple and Monero have emerged over time.

broadest sense, a fork is a modification in the protocol of the blockchain
software to decide whether or not a transaction is genuine. This means that
virtually any divergence can be deemed a fork in the blockchain.

Forks happen
when the user base or developers determine that something fundamental about a
cryptocurrency has to change. This can be due to a significant hack, as was the
case with Ethereum, or to a fundamental disagreement among the community, as
we've seen with Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash.

A fork can
have a significant influence on a coin. They are frequently based on huge price
swings and have proven to be highly contentious in the past.

modification that is backward compatible is referred to as a soft fork. When a
soft fork occurs, older nodes (computers that connect to the cryptocurrency's

Soft forks

fork. Any new transactions will be rejected by nodes running the outdated
software.
This means
that they will need to upgrade in order to mine new "legitimate"
chains. If a significant enough proportion of the community votes to stick to
the old regulations, the chain will split, resulting in two distinct
currencies.
A hard fork
necessitates majority support (or consensus) among coin holders connected to
the coin network.
A significant
number of nodes must update to the most recent version of the protocol software
in order for a hard fork to be adopted. This enables them to make advantage of
the new coin and blockchain.
Nodes that do
not upgrade will be unable to access the updated blockchain. If a sufficient
number of users do not update, a clean upgrade will be impossible, perhaps
resulting in a blockchain failure.
Before
completely activating an update, there are many techniques to confirm that
