Humble Beginnings
During the early years of his life, he attended a residential school in Mysuru, Karnataka known as Sri Ramakrishna Vidya Shala and had taken part in the respective music group of the school. During this time he was trained in classical Carnatic music by one of the best musicians ever produced by India, Sri Perumbavoor G. Raveendranath who was well known as both a carnatic musician and a composer from Kerala and was taught Western Classical music by Neecia Majolly, a fellow Indian concert musician and teacher.
Dawn of the Legacy
Throughout his life, Raj’s first major successful breakthrough was from the album “Winds of Samsara”. If you haven't heard of it, give it a try! It is a wonderful album dedicated to the two global icons of the peace movement Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela. It was composed by both three-time Grammy award winner Rickey Kej and the two-time Grammy award winning South African composer Wouter Kellerman. After this, he went to be a part of another successful venture in the form of a Kannada film called Harivu(2014) which would go on to win the 62nd National Award for “Best Kannada Film” from the Directorate of Film Festivals.
He developed a strong composer-director combo with Hemanth M Rao, another rising talent in the industry who understood the potentiality of Charan and went on to collaborate for all of his directed films. It began in 2016 with the successful venture of Rao’s first directorial, ”Godhi Banna Sadharana Mykattu” where Charan delivered an outstanding musical album critically acclaimed by both the critics and the audience. Songs from the album such as “Rangabhoomiye”, "Ale Moodade”, "Komala Henne”, "Naa E Sanjege” resonated deeply with the Kannada audiences owing to its rich melodies and soulful lyrics.
Symphony of Victory
It was in 2018 when Charan went on to produce one of the best commercial musical albums of all time in the form of Tagaru. It was his first musical collaboration with Sukka Suri, an established yet well-known director. The album received immense praise for its incredible mixture of electronic sounds and carnatic music in the form of its respective songs such as “Badukina Bannave”, ”Jeeva Sakhi”, ”Yaare Nee Chature” and many more. The song “Tagaru Banthu Tagaru” was a magnanimous success and was widely popularized by the local youth through its usage in various occasions such as festive celebrations, parties etc. Prior to Tagaru, he had won the Karnataka State Film Award for Best Music Director for his musical album “Jeerjimbe” and had scored for the movie named Pushpaka Vimana which was an official remake of the South Korean classic “Miracle in Cell No. 7”. Both of these albums have received a beautiful response and praise from critics and audiences alike.
In 2023, he decided to join forces with Coke Studio India and delivered an instant musical hit in the form of a song called “Geejaga Hakki” in collaboration with one of the popular singers of today, Sanjith Hegde and a classical singing maestro known as Prasanna Hegde. This was Coke Studio’s first Kannada venture and the lyrics of the song were penned by a well-known lyricist, Nagarjun Sharma.
Harmony Beyond Limits
As of 2024, he has delivered another successful commercial musical venture in the form of the album of the 2024 kannada film known as “Bheema” which explores the underbelly of drug abuse, violence and pain. Prior to this, he has received critical acclaim for the background score and songs of “Saptha Saagaradache Ello”, a two-part romantic duology which unravels the pain, hardships and consequences of love. This was his third collaboration with Hemanth M Rao, after their 2016 stint Godhi Banna Sadharana Mykattu and the mystery crime-thriller “Kavaludaari”(an album which you cannot afford to miss as an ardent lover of music!).
If you are still in need of adding something new to your musical bucket list, let’s try delving into the world of Charanraj’s melodies which are available in various musical platforms such as Spotify, JioSaavn, Amazon Music etc. and let the magic begin.
