Neha Saxena: Coaching Is the Legacy That Lives On [Badminton Player & Coach, 61k Followers, India]

Neha Saxena Interview

“Natural talent gives you a start, but structured coaching builds longevity.”

From international competition to world-class coaching, Neha brings experience from both sides of the game. Her philosophy is simple: talent opens doors, but disciplined coaching builds lasting success.

Q. You've experienced badminton both as a player and a coach. How differently do you see the same match from these two roles?

As a player, I'm inside the emotion of every point. As a coach, I'm watching patterns, decision-making, spacing, and mental shifts. It's the same match, but as a coach I understand the "why" behind each rally instead of just the outcome.

Q. Has coaching ever changed the way you personally play the game?

Yes, definitely. Now that I am a coach myself, I understand my coach's point of view much better. It has made me more disciplined in my own game and more intentional about shot selection, patience, and consistency.

Q. Representing both India and the United States, how different are the playing and coaching cultures?

The cultures are quite different. In India, the system is more continuous with a strong training and competition structure. In the United States, tournaments are very weekend focused, which makes them extremely intense. At times it is more challenging physically and mentally, especially as I am getting older, because I may end up playing six to seven matches in a single day. That changes how you prepare, recover, and manage energy.

Q. Do you think being an active player makes you a better coach, or does it sometimes create challenges?

Being an active player definitely helps me as a coach. It motivates my students more because when they see me still in the same environment and going through similar situations, they relate to me better. It builds trust and we share a stronger common ground, which makes coaching more effective.

Q. What's more emotionally intense for you, winning your own match or seeing your student win?

Seeing my student win is more emotional. My own win is personal, but their win feels like shared effort, growth, and investment coming together.

Q. How do you balance your time and energy between training yourself and training others?

It is about discipline and structure. I keep both sessions completely separate. Earlier I sometimes trained with my students, but not anymore because it becomes exhausting and affects focus. Now I prioritize one thing at a time and stay fully present in each session.

Q. As someone certified by the Badminton World Federation, how important is structured coaching compared to natural talent?

Natural talent gives you a start, but structured coaching builds longevity. Talent gets you going, but structured training and coaching shape that talent into consistency, discipline, and long-term growth. Both are important, but coaching is what sustains a career.

Q. What legacy would you like to build, more as a player, or through the players you train?

For me, coaching is the greatest form of leadership, and that is where real long-term growth happens. With my own students, it is not just about what I teach them today, it is something that stays with them even when I am not there. Ideally, they will pass it forward to someone else as well. That chain of learning is what matters most. Through them, I get to experience the game all over again, and even as I continue improving myself, my coaching is what will outlive everything else.
